DIARY OF A FEMALE BALLER: KAYLA BECKFORD 2022 PATERSON, NJ (NEW JERSEY SPARKS) ENTRY #5

KAYLA & FRIENDS

Hello Basketball World, this is Kayla checking in for Week 5.

Monday - I woke up at 8 a.m. for my early basketball workout with Tarik. It took me a while to adjust, being that I’m not anything close to being a morning person. After the workout, I played a couple of games of 1 on 1 with my strength & conditioning trainer. I beat him 3 games to 1, he got lucky that one game he won. I came home for a little while until the city pool opened, since it was hot. My brother and I did basketball warmups in the water and then we swam for like an hour. I got home, took a shower and got ready to go the NJ State Fair with my brother, dad and 3 friends. I had a real great time at the fair with one of my former teammates and best friends. We were there from like 4 to 10:30, and by the time I got home I was tired. When I got home, I took a shower and went right to sleep.

Tuesday - Fourth of July! I woke up pretty late today being that I was out late last night. I put up some shots at an outside basketball court. I was home for a while until I went to the same friend as yesterday's house. We were outside playing basketball for majority of the time I was there. The unfortunate part about it though is that I got a lot of mosquito bites from being outside all day. I came home at an early time so my mom could wash and do my hair. I enjoyed my day.

Wednesday - I worked out only once today but it was meaningful because I got better. I felt like I had a great shooting day. With every drill I did, I felt like my shots were if not perfect, then almost perfect.

Thursday - Today, I slept really late probably until noon. I had strength & conditioning at 4 p.m. and then workouts with my dad after. In strength & conditioning I worked on explosiveness with frog jump, battles ropes, balancing on a bosu ball with added weights. At the end we worked on abs with planks, sitting twists, knee to elbows, high crunches, cross crunches, knee crunches, and the last thing was the superman stretch. Immediately after that, my dad worked me out doing ball handling, moves for attacking the basket, baseline moves, foul shots of course, and shooting. I had a good day.

Friday - I had my first workout of the day with Tarik. Today I focused on effectiveness and precision with everything I do. Then later, I was supposed to have practice, but it got canceled. So instead my father worked out my teammates and I at Eastside. In the gym, it felt hotter than ever but I had to get through it. I didn't let the heat limit me to getting better even if it was only for a short amount of time. Today I felt like I got better.

Saturday - My team didn't have any games this weekend so today I went with my mother to visit my grandfather. I had to take advantage of my free day to go visit him because he has been in and out of the hospital for the past few weeks. We stayed with him for about five hours getting home a little late. I enjoyed the day with my mom and grandfather. I really wish I could see all of my grandparents more often, but being a very busy student athlete restricts me.

Sunday - I spent most of my day resting. Everyone once in awhile I would get up to help my mother with house chores. Before I went to bed, I stretched and got ready for the USJN East Coast Challenge at Kean University this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
